An in-depth journey that covers almost all the incredible unexplored sites of the epic Ha Giang promising to grant you a truly memorable experience of natural, cultural and traditional aspects in the land. 

This 9-day adventure takes you from the white highland in Bac Ha to the stunning terraced rice fields in Hoang Su Phi, from the peaceful hamlets of the Tay tribal community in Ha Giang to the exotic Dong Van Karst Plateau. It would be an arduous and long expedition but a rewarding lifetime experience as well.

Itinerary

Get ready before 8 AM for a transfer to the “White Highlands” Bac Ha with its specific use as a “land of opium” during the 20th century on a 7-hour drive. Up on arrival, time for you to discover Bac Ha on foot.

The ancient Palace of King Hoang A Tuong and Bac Ha Market mark the second morning. If today falls on Sunday, you will see a typical northwestern open fair run by the Hmong people. 

Afterwards, head to Hoang Su Phi on a 4-hour trip, where you get to enjoy the beauty of nature and the adventurous rugged roads. Lunch is set in the town of Coc Pai.

After lunch, drive up the mountain to reach the top at Ban Phung Village, home of the unique La Chi people. 

Take a short rest in the afternoon and discover the hamlet on foot. La Chi Ancient Tomb is the best highlight in the afternoon followed by the absolute view of the rice fields from the top of the mountain during the romantic sunset.

Today is saved for an off the beaten path 3-hour trek to discover Ban Phung. Roaming through the jungle, encountering La Chi tribal villages or winding around the endless rice fields are what to be offered. 

Stop at a local school to interact with local children who welcome you with the warmest open arms.

After trekking, head to Hoang Su Phi township where lunch is served at a local restaurant. The rest of the day is a transfer by car to Nam Hong Village, home of the Yao people. Time to catch the romantic sunset in the middle of the charming terraced rice fields at the end of the day.

Another 15-km trek gets your energetic day started with an array of trails winding through the endless rice terraces across Nam Khoa Village, a place inhabited by the Man Ta Pan ethnic group. This is a good place to admire the stunning view of the vast rice fields and discover the daily life of the inhabitants as well. A closer look into these special groups of Man Ta Pan and Long Tunics Yao people will surely live up your spectacular trip.

What’s more? Get ready to learn about the culture of the Red Yao people and visit tea plantations in Phin Ho Hamlet. Here, get to admire the enormous oldest Shan Tuyet tea trees across Vietnam and its essential uses in the lives of these inhabitants. 

Heading straight to Nam Ai after a short break. This is where the Long Tunics Yao call it their home. 

The differences between the Red Yao and the Long Tunics Yao would also be revealed by our guide during your enjoyable meal with the fresh home-made ingredients.

Wake up early to welcome the sunrise before moving to Ha Giang for 2 hours.

The rest of the day is a good time to discover the Tay tribal villages filled with the greenish rice paddies, Tay wooden stilt houses, mysterious palm forests and end up with the peaceful local stream.

Explore the hidden parts of Ha Giang with a full day 18-km trek on this sixth day of the trip.

Departing from a local Tay village, you will trek up the off-road trails, wind through the wild forests and emerald terraced rice fields to reach the peak of Tay Con Linh Mountain Range - residential place of the Yao people. 

Take time to enjoy the stunning panoramic view before lunch at a local Yao restaurant.

After that, stroll down the valley and finish the trek after nearly 7-hour off the beaten path trekking. 

The last 1-hour drive today takes you to Quan Ba District, where you are about to experience an overnight homestay in a unique clay-made traditional Yao house.

Riding around the Red Yao tribal village on a bike to kick start your energetic day. Take this chance to fully learn what's special behind the traditional lifestyle and culture.

After around 2-hour cycling, continue the drive to Dong Van. Have a short walk here to some Hmong villages after lunch in Yen Minh. 

Finish the day with a visit to the ancient Palace of a Hmong King before arriving in Dong Van. If time permits, freely enjoy another 20-minute walk to enjoy the panoramic sunset on the top of a closeby mountain, where a vacant French Fortress is found.

Day eight starts with a morning trip to Dong Van fresh market. If you're lucky enough to make it on Sunday, then chances are you would observe the distinctive flea market of the Hmong people. 

Next, hike up the mountain to the edge trail with a mind-blowing look down Nho Que Valley where there is a magnificent view of the mighty mountainous border with China.

Reach Thien Huong Village after a 7-km hiking. Over there, the Tay tribal group live their life in an utmost peace in a typical clay house. Get back to Dong Van on the same route for lunch. 

In the afternoon, a 20-minute drive transports you to the trekking point at Ma Pi Leng Pass. Get ready to be amazed by the glorious appearance of this top-of-the-world destination. This 3-hour walk leads to the top of the pass after sneaking through the local Hmong hamlets and ends after a stroll via a corridor on the edge of the mountain viewing down Tu San Canyon. 

Appreciate this natural beauty for a while before taking a 2-hour drive to Yen Minh via Meo Vac Town.

Say goodbye to this memorable rural paradise before ending this adventure and back to Hanoi.
